My name is Dustin Lowry and I have 11 years of experience in the Fire Service and Emergency Medical Services. I started in 2012 by volunteering for Lincoln Fire Protection District. I attended Lake Land College, where I obtained an associate degree in Paramedical Services and then became a Nationally Registered Paramedic. In 2022, I also obtained a CCEMT-P certificate through UMBC. In 2016, I continued my education in the fire industry and obtained Basic Operations Firefighter. I later pursued my Advanced Fire Operations. During this time, I accepted an officer role as a Lieutenant in 2016 at Lincoln Fire Protection where I still serve as an officer. I am employed by the Charleston Fire Department. I am currently serving as a Firefighter Paramedic and working towards officer roles in the department. Every day I strive for success by continuing my education, learning from previous experiences, and listening to knowledgeable and positive people.
Performed daily tasks on ambulances such as ensuring that ambulances and equipment are in proper working order, as well as cleaned and ready to respond to calls. During my time here the ambulance was primarily 911 transport, however, they also take emergent transfers from hospital to hospital. Additionally, when we're not on transfers or 911 calls we will assist at the hospital as needed, such as help the emergency department and other departments. During my current time here, the service runs approximately 3500 calls in a fiscal year.
The Charleston Fire Department runs approximately 6000 calls in a typical year. The majority of these calls are EMS related. In my 8 years at CFD, I have had the privilege of being the primary care provider on calls, as well as assisting and leading EMS training. Within the last year, I have stepped into a new role of mentoring our newer EMTs throughout their paramedic program. During my time here, I have also had the ability to continue my education and obtain certification through CCEMT-P. Other parts of my daily duties include fire ground operations, apparatus checks, and maintenance, and weekly training of Fire, EMS, TRT, and Haz-Mat.

While I've been volunteering for the past 11 years, I have been promoted to the rank of Lieutenant for the past 4 years. I respond to emergency calls to our district that include vehicle wrecks, fires, and medical calls. My duties on the fire scene include gathering a crew together to perform a task and overview that task as an officer, relaying information back to incident command about our progress or needs. I also take control of a scene and become incident Command until a higher-ranking officer has arrived and is able to take command. Additionally, I take the lead role in training our fire station trainees during our monthly meetings.
As a Basic Instructor, I will assist the lead instructor with teaching a group of students about various fire service tasks. This includes but is not limited to fire behavior, search techniques, hose advancement, and rescuing the victim. This is a majority of hands-on teaching however, there can be some classroom time that I will assist the lead instructor. Another task of my job is to also get seniors ready such as live fire props and placing mannequins as victims throughout our training site.
